LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) is a lithium-ion chemistry that uses iron phosphate as the cathode. Compared with older NMC or lead-acid batteries, it is far safer (no thermal-runaway risk under abuse), longer-lived and more stable across temperature — which is why it is the de-facto standard for energy storage today.

A typical Gerchamp LiFePO4 module pairs A+ grade cells with a smart BMS and CAN / RS485 / RS232 communication so it talks directly to hybrid inverters. Energy is stored chemically and released through the BMS, which protects against over-charge, over-discharge, over-current, short-circuit and over-temperature.

C-rate describes how fast a battery is charged or discharged relative to its capacity. 1C means the full capacity is delivered in one hour. A 100Ah battery at 1C supplies 100A; at 0.5C it supplies 50A over two hours.

For ESS, a higher continuous C-rate means the battery can handle sudden large loads (motors, pumps, inverter switch-over). Gerchamp residential modules typically support 1C continuous, while C&I units support higher surge. When comparing suppliers, always ask for the continuous AND peak C-rate, not just capacity.

Lifespan is measured in cycles at a given Depth of Discharge (DoD). Gerchamp LiFePO4 cells deliver ≥ 6000 cycles at 80% DoD, and often 8000+ at shallower DoD. Unlike lead-acid, you can regularly use 80–90% of capacity without killing the battery.

Real-world life is also driven by temperature, charge profile and BMS quality. A well-managed 10kWh pack at one cycle/day easily runs 10+ years — which is why we offer up to 10-year warranty options.

"48V" is the nominal system label; a 16-cell LiFePO4 stack's actual nominal voltage is 51.2V (16 × 3.2V). So 48V and 51.2V batteries are the same chemistry — 51.2V is simply the precise nominal.

Inverters rated for "48V" systems expect this 51.2V working range (≈44–58V). Always match the inverter's accepted low-voltage range rather than the marketing number. Gerchamp modules are 51.2V nominal and compatible with mainstream 48V hybrid inverters.

Compare on: (1) cell grade (A+ vs B), (2) real cycle life at 80% DoD, (3) BMS quality and protections, (4) communication protocols (CAN / RS485 / RS232) for inverter matching, (5) IP rating for your install location, (6) parallel scalability, (7) certifications (CE / UN38.3 / IEC62619 / IEC62109), (8) warranty length, (9) manufacturer track record.

Price per kWh matters less than total cost of ownership over 10 years. Ask the supplier for a spec sheet and a reference project before committing.

10kWh covers a typical home evening load (lighting, fridge, Wi-Fi, some AC) for 8–12 hours. Look for a 51.2V 200Ah module (or two 5.12kWh in parallel), 1C discharge, IP21 / IP65 optional for indoor/outdoor, and hybrid-inverter compatibility.

Confirm the BMS supports your inverter protocol before purchase. For whole-home backup including AC, size up to 15–20kWh.

Start from daily consumption (kWh/day). Divide by usable DoD (e.g., 90%) to get needed capacity, then add 1–2 days of autonomy for cloudy periods.

Example: 12 kWh/day ÷ 0.9 ≈ 13.3 kWh → two 5.12kWh + one 2.56kWh, or one 10.24kWh + one 5.12kWh. Gerchamp stacks parallel up to 16 units, so you can scale later.

Compatibility depends on voltage window, communication protocol and BMS brand list. Gerchamp batteries speak CAN / RS485 / RS232 and are tested with mainstream 48V hybrid inverters (Deye, Victron, Growatt, Luxpower, SMA, and more).

Always confirm the inverter's low-voltage battery range and request the matching BMS protocol file. Our team pre-validates common pairings and shares wiring diagrams.

Checklist: (1) voltage class (LV 48V / 51.2V vs HV), (2) inverter's accepted battery voltage window, (3) communication protocol match, (4) max charge/discharge current vs battery C-rate, (5) grounding & fusing, (6) parallel battery balancing.

Get a one-line diagram from the supplier. Gerchamp provides commissioning support for distributors and installers.

LV (48V / 51.2V) systems are simpler, cheaper and safer for residential and small C&I, with mature hybrid-inverter support. HV (≈200–400V) stacks reduce current for large C&I sites and pair with HV inverters, but cost more and need stricter isolation.

Choose LV for ≤30kWh residential; consider HV for larger commercial plants. Gerchamp focuses on LV 51.2V modular stacks, scalable to 16 units.

C&I sites use storage for peak-shaving (avoid demand charges), backup during outages, and self-consumption of PV. Key needs: high cycle life, scalable capacity, remote monitoring and safety certifications.

Gerchamp 10.24kWh and 16.08kWh modules rack-mount and parallel to build 50–500kWh systems. Payback is driven by local tariff structure and PV size.

A small hotel (≈30 rooms) with 20–40kWh evening load might need 30–60kWh of storage plus PV. Worked example: 25 kWh/day ÷ 0.9 ≈ 28 kWh → e.g., two 10.24kWh + one 5.12kWh modules.

Design storage after PV: size the battery to night-time load or to absorb excess midday PV (self-consumption). Match the inverter; use hybrid or AC-coupled architecture.

Each cell is graded (capacity, internal resistance, voltage) before assembly; modules get BMS communication tests, insulation tests and a full charge/discharge aging cycle. Out-of-spec units are rejected.

This disciplined process is why we can warrant our packs for up to 10 years.

A+ cells have tighter capacity / internal-resistance tolerance, lower self-discharge and longer cycle life than B-grade. In a parallel stack, matched cells balance better and age evenly — protecting the whole system.

Choosing A+ grade is the single biggest factor in 10-year reliability, which is why Gerchamp specifies A+ cells in every pack.
