LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) is a lithium-ion chemistry that uses iron phosphate as the cathode. Compared with older NMC or lead-acid batteries, it is far safer (no thermal-runaway risk under abuse), longer-lived and more stable across temperature โ€” which is why it is the de-facto standard for energy storage today.

A typical Gerchamp LiFePO4 module pairs A+ grade cells with a smart BMS and CAN / RS485 / RS232 communication so it talks directly to hybrid inverters. Energy is stored chemically and released through the BMS, which protects against over-charge, over-discharge, over-current, short-circuit and over-temperature.

What Is C-Rate?

How discharge rate affects which loads your battery can power.

C-rate describes how fast a battery is charged or discharged relative to its capacity. 1C means the full capacity is delivered in one hour. A 100Ah battery at 1C supplies 100A; at 0.5C it supplies 50A over two hours.

For ESS, a higher continuous C-rate means the battery can handle sudden large loads (motors, pumps, inverter switch-over). Gerchamp residential modules typically support 1C continuous, while C&I units support higher surge. When comparing suppliers, always ask for the continuous AND peak C-rate, not just capacity.

Lifespan is measured in cycles at a given Depth of Discharge (DoD). Gerchamp LiFePO4 cells deliver โ‰ฅ 6000 cycles at 80% DoD, and often 8000+ at shallower DoD. Unlike lead-acid, you can regularly use 80โ€“90% of capacity without killing the battery.

48V vs 51.2V Battery

The naming difference and why it matters for system design.

"48V" is the nominal system label; a 16-cell LiFePO4 stack's actual nominal voltage is 51.2V (16 ร— 3.2V). So 48V and 51.2V batteries are the same chemistry โ€” 51.2V is simply the precise nominal.

Inverters rated for "48V" systems expect this 51.2V working range (โ‰ˆ44โ€“58V). Always match the inverter's accepted low-voltage range rather than the marketing number. Gerchamp modules are 51.2V nominal and compatible with mainstream 48V hybrid inverters.
